Calhoun Students Join Insitu Hair Salon To Support
Locks of Love
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY
When: Tuesday, May 16, 2006, 4:30-6:30pm
What: Calhoun School Students Donate Tresses to Locks of
Love, with help from Insitu Hair Salon
Where: Insitu Hair Salon, 77 Irving Place, NY, NY 10003
Why: Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that provides
hairpieces to children who suffer from medical hair loss
The organization has helped more than 1,000 children
since 1997.
Nine Calhoun students and their teacher started growing their
hair back in September, all in pursuit of the ceremonial day when
they could get it cut off -- to donate their tresses to needy
children.
On May 16th, the Calhoun students (5th-7th graders) will travel
from their Upper West Side school to Insitu Hair Salon in Gramercy
Park for a Hair Donation Party, at which time they
will be given free haircuts.
We would have had at least two more students participating,
but their hair didnt grow quite fast enough to satisfy the
10-inch requirement, notes teacher David Hyman, who organized
the group and is preparing to have his own ponytail cut to the
quick. In addition to the students, he expects a number of parents
to share in the moment -- a few who have expressed interest in
having their locks shorn, as well.
Insitu Salon owner Paula Casano estimates that in the last four
years, her hairstylists have given more than 500 free haircuts
in support of the Locks of Love effort.
Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces
to financially disadvantaged children, 18 years and younger, who
suffer from all types of medical hair loss. Since its inception
in 1997, the organization has helped more than 1,000 children.
Thousands of bundles of donated hair arrive from around the country
as a result of national publicity in newspapers, magazines and
television programs.
